NORWALK — Airline Virgin Atlantic is marketing the first mobile application to help overcome travelers’ fear of flying. The Flying Without Fear app, available on iPhone and iPod Touch through its App store for $4.99, has a 98-percent success rate, according to the Norwalk carrier, with actress Whoopi Goldberg as a successful user.

In a statement, Goldberg said: “The program works. I was a skeptic. I hadn’t flown in 13 years but after doing their program, I understood that while my fear was real, there were many things I didn’t know or had misinformation about, which they were able to clear up.”

The Flying Without Fear application was developed by software maker Mental Workout, which develops apps focused on helping people resolve issues and increase mental performance.

The Flying Without Fear app is a video-based in-flight explanation from start to finish of a flight. The app offers relaxation exercises, fear therapy, a fear-attack button for emergencies with breathing exercises and quick tips, as well as a “My Program” feature with which each user can rate his or her personal fears and add future flights to prepare them for their next trip.
